Evolution Valley was about four miles long, and descended from 10,000 to 9,000 feet elevation, which was quite a mellow grade, and definitely below the treeline. Evolution Lake has lots of excellent campsites. Beyond Huntington, the road narrows and in places is steep and windy as it climbs over 9,184-foot Kaiser Pass and descends to Florence and Edison lakes. Plenty of water along the trail and also plenty of places to camp. Day 2 Dusy Basin to Big Pete Meadow But the views from the trail made up for it. Follow it 2.1 miles back to the trailhead. Conditions are continuously changing and wilderness hikers need to plan for inclement weather. Not only that, but the trail was going to head even lower as I followed the river downstream. The river and steam crossings were simple because the water level is so low at this point in the season. I was OK with this, as its hard to tell distance when youre hiking fast downhill, as it feels so much different heading the other way. Completed this loop South - North May 26-29. By the time I was ready to hike I looked down at the tents below me on the shore of the lake and only one person had crawled out of their tent. Its not an extremely hard hike; most of it is pretty gradual and flat in the meadows, but there are two sections of switchbacks: heading up into evolution valley and heading up to evolution lake, but they werent too bad. There are several decent camping spots in the meadow and they are all next to heavy-flowing Piute Creek. We had heard that you could maybe get an employee of Parcher's Resort to give you a lift to the North Lake Trailhead -- they are located a mile down the road from the South Lake Trailhead. Push to camp spots near the McClure Meadow ranger station; you will be rewarded with the best breakfast scenery the next day (night 2). Id see how I felt when I got to the the trail junction. At mile 5.5 we crossed the river again and took a short break at the base of a long series of switchbacks that would bring us up to Evolution Valley. The hiking was challenging for us (22 year old girls), but we probably brought too heavy of packs. Us silly girls didnt expect something for nothing did we? Over Piute pass has one patch of snow to cross and it was also a non-issue. Very nice hike, lots of scenery. My two recommendations. Having two cars so as to shuttle between trailheads made the logistics a lot easier. There must have been many more waterfalls on the way down, but, sadly, that wasnt part of my plan for the day. Muir Pass Day three Descend 7.3 miles on the JMT into Evolution Valley, then add an easy 1.2 miles to camp by Evolution Lake. We took the ferry both ways to save us some time and miles! classic Sierra beauty from the very start. I hung out by the creek for an hour and a half, until 3pm. Here is a brief summary of our route: South Lake Trailhead - Bishop Pass - Dusy Basin - LeConte Canyon - Muir Pass - Evolution Valley - Puite Creek Canyon - Humphrey's Basin - Piute Pass - North Lake Trailhead. We took four full, plus two half days, to hike the 57-mile route starting at South Lake and ending at North Lake, so 10-12 miles each day was the score. When we crossed the river it was only about knee deep and also like to mention NO mosquitoes so we were super lucky. Beautiful alpine lakes, waterfalls, and my God the meadows. When we finished our descent and arrived at the ranger station in the deep forest of Le Conte Canyon we also reached the junction on which the trail merges with the Pacific Crest Trail(PCT)/ John Muir Trail. Leisurely pace over 6 days / 7 nights, This was an amazing hike! Some of the travel is cross country but fairly easy to navigate. On day 4 we headed east along Piute Canyon toward lovely Humphreys Basin, a timeless spot overlooking the Glacier Divide to which we have returned again and again. I had descended 2500 feet and climbed another 1000 feet to get up here. From there we pass through the giant cirque of Humphreys Basin, and into Hutchinson Meadow, and Piute Canyon. One bite of the Evolution area is Piute Pass going in is a bit of a doozy so push on over and head for lower altitude camping or you may be whacked by the elevation. It was great to get back and do another hike in the High Sierra. Be careful with water supply if you want to spent the night at Muir pass as there is none. Florence Lake Store and Ferry. I kept hoping to find a side stream, but all of the obvious places were dry as a bone. Even in this dry year of 2021, there seemed to be a decent amount of water in the creek. It follows the south fork of the San Joaquin and Evolution Creek nearly all the way. Massive trail work project that ascends a sheer gully with switchbacks stacked on top of one another like wacky Jenga blocks. This famous combo-trail will be our path for the next 26.5 miles. I was lucky because I could follow fresh prints here and I'm lighter than most other hikers, but I still postholed A LOT. I told them to skip Oregon, because it sounded mostly like boring forest with no views, and a hiker named Strawberry told me that there was a thing called Oregon in Two Weeks which skips the lame parts. Leave the JMT, and follow the drainage up to Darwin Canyon. Up until Sep 11th there was a shuttle service that we could have used to get from South Lake to the North Lake trailhead -- running a couple of times a day and costing $20. Some of the best are right at the outlet with a view both down into Evolution Valley, and back up the Basin, though those were taken when we arrived, even at that early hour (mostly people staying there for several days it seemed). Julia, Megan and I were to spend 9 days accomplishing this; Trekker9, Slabwalker and JP however had work commitments and would squeeze it into 7 days - leaving us after 5-6 days and taking 2 days to exit over Lamarck. Although the trail from the head of Florence Lake to Evolution Valley climbs over 2,000 feet, most of the elevation gain comes during the last miles. They finished up their meal and continued onward, while I read my book and watched the river go by. The first day of hiking is over moderate terrain with meadows and the occasional company of the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. Starting at the North Lake TH, we will cross Piute Pass (11,423'). Which didnt happen until I reached Piute Creek and the metal bridge that crossed it. We did 7 nights, 8 days with our first and last days being half days. It was quite dramatic. One bite of the Evolution area is liable to infect any passerby, causing even the most mileage-minded thru-hike If the John Muir Trail is the crown jewel of the Pacific Crest Trail, then the Evolution Basin and Valley are perhaps the most strikingly-sculpted gem to be carefully placed in that jewel. Campsites: Good sites along Evolution Creek by Evolution Meadow, McClure Meadow and Colby Meadow. Nineteen miles from the nearest trailhead, Evolution Valley is a two-day hike for most backpackers. This was the most difficult day as we ascended over 3200 with 30+ & 40+ lb packs. This is an excellent report on a great hiking trip. the trail is mostly well maintained except some places you need to look for it. Deer are seen occasionally. Dinners were instant potatoes with packaged salmon or tuna along with instant soup or couscous. As we got going again I was giving myself a pretty serious mental pep talk about taking it easy and giving myself the time needed to work my way up the 700 feet of rocky switchbacks. Though cooler than July, day-wear was still shorts and t-shirts and nights two layers and a puffy jacket. Because of the late snowfall, we were graced with the continued presence of wildflowers, complimented by the beginnings of golden fall, as we skip-trah-lahed our way alongside crashing gorge waterfalls and the calm tracing of the San Joaquin River. Just finished the loop from south lake to north lake. It was high noon, I realized, and there wasnt any shade at all on the trail with the sun beaming straight down between the trees. I am now a retired academic, so I was able, in all three trips, to exploit my college timing to hike in early September before the start of classes. Usually we did it in 7 days. Hundreds of feet of granite on one side, and beautiful open meadow on the other. I said a silent thank you before dropping over the top, then apologized to my knees for the steep, descending switch backs they were about to receive. I wasnt thrilled, but I figured that there would be a side creek somewhere along the way, as the map showed some possibilities. John Muir Rock rises directly to the east. That was a big mistake. Muir Pass snow is melting fast and maybe only 1.5 miles worth heading northbound and maybe 2 over towards Sapphire Lake.
