Evolution Valley was about four miles long, and descended from 10,000 to 9,000 feet elevation, which was quite a mellow grade, and definitely below the treeline. Evolution Lake has lots of excellent campsites. Beyond Huntington, the road narrows and in places is steep and windy as it climbs over 9,184-foot Kaiser Pass and descends to Florence and Edison lakes. Plenty of water along the trail and also plenty of places to camp. Only done it North to South. Thousands upon thousands of happy people enjoying the wilderness. Youll find other good campsites on this knoll. Turn left and descend to Upper Lamarck Lake. Day 2 Dusy Basin to Big Pete Meadow But the views from the trail made up for it. Follow it 2.1 miles back to the trailhead. Conditions are continuously changing and wilderness hikers need to plan for inclement weather. Not only that, but the trail was going to head even lower as I followed the river downstream. The river and steam crossings were simple because the water level is so low at this point in the season. I was OK with this, as its hard to tell distance when youre hiking fast downhill, as it feels so much different heading the other way. Completed this loop South - North May 26-29. I heard it thundering off to the side of the trail and went over to check it out, and Im glad I did. My sincere thanks to the fire fairies who set this up for us. Didnt know you needed a reservation to drive through Yosemite, so consider going through Sonora Pass (unless you go through after 4pm). By the time I was ready to hike I looked down at the tents below me on the shore of the lake and only one person had crawled out of their tent. Its not an extremely hard hike; most of it is pretty gradual and flat in the meadows, but there are two sections of switchbacks: heading up into evolution valley and heading up to evolution lake, but they werent too bad. We parked at Lake Sabrina, hiked up past the Tyee Lakes to South Lake and then completed the loop clockwise. There are several decent camping spots in the meadow and they are all next to heavy-flowing Piute Creek. Now that the best parts of the trek were over (quite possibly), I was beginning to yearn for home. Also included are North Lake, South Lake, Piute Pass, Evolution Valley and Lake Sabrina. We had heard that you could maybe get an employee of Parcher's Resort to give you a lift to the North Lake Trailhead -- they are located a mile down the road from the South Lake Trailhead. Push to camp spots near the McClure Meadow ranger station; you will be rewarded with the best breakfast scenery the next day (night 2). Id see how I felt when I got to the the trail junction. At mile 5.5 we crossed the river again and took a short break at the base of a long series of switchbacks that would bring us up to Evolution Valley. The hiking was challenging for us (22 year old girls), but we probably brought too heavy of packs. Us silly girls didnt expect something for nothing did we? Over Piute pass has one patch of snow to cross and it was also a non-issue. Very nice hike, lots of scenery. My two recommendations. Having two cars so as to shuttle between trailheads made the logistics a lot easier. There must have been many more waterfalls on the way down, but, sadly, that wasnt part of my plan for the day. Muir Pass Day three Descend 7.3 miles on the JMT into Evolution Valley, then add an easy 1.2 miles to camp by Evolution Lake. We took the ferry both ways to save us some time and miles! classic Sierra beauty from the very start. I hung out by the creek for an hour and a half, until 3pm. Here is a brief summary of our route: South Lake Trailhead - Bishop Pass - Dusy Basin - LeConte Canyon - Muir Pass - Evolution Valley - Puite Creek Canyon - Humphrey's Basin - Piute Pass - North Lake Trailhead. We took four full, plus two half days, to hike the 57-mile route starting at South Lake and ending at North Lake, so 10-12 miles each day was the score. When we crossed the river it was only about knee deep and also like to mention NO mosquitoes so we were super lucky. Beautiful alpine lakes, waterfalls, and my God the meadows. When we finished our descent and arrived at the ranger station in the deep forest of Le Conte Canyon we also reached the junction on which the trail merges with the Pacific Crest Trail(PCT)/ John Muir Trail. Leisurely pace over 6 days / 7 nights, This was an amazing hike! Some of the travel is cross country but fairly easy to navigate. Along the way I came across the Muir Rock which I had seen on the topo map. omg. Oh well. On day 4 we headed east along Piute Canyon toward lovely Humphreys Basin, a timeless spot overlooking the Glacier Divide to which we have returned again and again. I had descended 2500 feet and climbed another 1000 feet to get up here. From there we pass through the giant cirque of Humphreys Basin, and into Hutchinson Meadow, and Piute Canyon. One bite of the Evolution area is Piute Pass going in is a bit of a doozy so push on over and head for lower altitude camping or you may be whacked by the elevation. It was great to get back and do another hike in the High Sierra. Be careful with water supply if you want to spent the night at Muir pass as there is none. Florence Lake Store and Ferry. It is, of course, the perfect time for this 5 - 7 day hike. And it felt like it. That was about 8 miles, we had wanted to camp at the meadow but was beat so made camp a couple miles sooner. finished this in 5days avaraging 12miles a day. Once over Bishop Pass, we descended down approximately 5-6 miles to South Lake where we ended our journey. The best hike of my life. The next morning, we went over Piute Pass and continued 10+ miles through beautiful Piute Canyon to Hutchinson Meadow. Then got up and hiked to the ferry to see if it was running and what do you know it was! Mosquitos were bad, but not horrible. We passed more than a dozen lakes some of which I will mention when I upload photos. Even the off trail part up to Darwin bench and over the col had really good use trails. Is there some exception for Evolution Valley? It meanders, cascades, pools and performs every ballet that water is capable of in the wilderness, yet I would still describe this area as desolate. I kept hoping to find a side stream, but all of the obvious places were dry as a bone. Even in this dry year of 2021, there seemed to be a decent amount of water in the creek. It follows the south fork of the San Joaquin and Evolution Creek nearly all the way. The North Lake-South Lake loop is the famous "Rainbow Trail" and includes spectacular scenery visiting such areas as Dusy basin, Le Conte Canyon, Muir Pass, Evolution valley, and Humphrey's Basin. Our total hiking miles over 5 days was 41.8 miles then we caught the ferry for the extra couple. Starting at Lake Sabrina we could do a proper loop with just two 2 mile stretches on the road. Wheres there a low altitude pass that brings me out East of the Darwin Glacier? Evolution Valley was flower-filled, even in this drought year. Our payback day ended up being 13 miles, almost all uphill. She was seriously considering it. On my way between JMT and Piute there were 5+ stream crossings that necessitated wading. Note: Bishop Pass hikers will encounter dozens deer skeletons on the steep slope below Bishop Pass. Day 1: The first day held an unexpected bonus in that, inadvertently, it turned out to be Get-used-to-less-oxygen Day. We made a few mistakes that cost us a lot of time, however.we didn't take the ferry out, and lost the trail around the lake - a mistake that cost us several hours to climb over boulders and ledges. Bugs were not a issue. The trail on the right leads north into French Canyon. Highly recommend pushing up to lower Dusy Basin (though there are several campsites about 1200 vertical feet up from Le Conte, just prior to a bridge crossing) (night 4). Massive trail work project that ascends a sheer gully with switchbacks stacked on top of one another like wacky Jenga blocks. This famous combo-trail will be our path for the next 26.5 miles. Slept like a drunken sailor. The mosquitos were relentless though. A great spot! The climb up to Piute Pass was uneventful, passing a series of lakes on the way to the day's high point. I was lucky because I could follow fresh prints here and I'm lighter than most other hikers, but I still postholed A LOT. I told them to skip Oregon, because it sounded mostly like boring forest with no views, and a hiker named Strawberry told me that there was a thing called Oregon in Two Weeks which skips the lame parts. Absolutely beautiful. Even so, with campsites spread out along its length, the valley never seems crowded. The McClure Meadow is one of the most beautiful meadows I have ever seen! 110 Piute Pass Trail junction, 17 mi. I only had about a liter left of the three Id started with that morning. In summary this section went from Lake Thomas A. Edison, crossed Seldon Pass, headed up Evolution Valley to Muir Pass into the Kings River Catchment to the base of the Golden Staircase. That pond is the same pond I had lunch at last year descending from Bishop Pass into Le Conte Canyon. This is one of my favorite trips of many in the eastern Sierra. We hiked it in 7 days but could have done in 6. I had 2500 feet of climbing to do tomorrow, and I wanted to get as much of it done as possible while it was still cool. When Leor Pantilat's FKT for the Evolution "loop" came up in my news feed, I skimmed it and moved on, having other things on my mind. I had a really good time and met several really nice people. Leave the JMT, and follow the drainage up to Darwin Canyon. Up until Sep 11th there was a shuttle service that we could have used to get from South Lake to the North Lake trailhead -- running a couple of times a day and costing $20. Backpacking Has Changed a Lot Over the Past 50 Years. Some of the best are right at the outlet with a view both down into Evolution Valley, and back up the Basin, though those were taken when we arrived, even at that early hour (mostly people staying there for several days it seemed). The best time ever, I mean. this is the one backpack trip I remember with my dad, friend and his dad.. in 1959.. Spend up to 3 days there, then out via Evolution Valley, Darwin Basin & Lamarck Col. Julia, Megan and I were to spend 9 days accomplishing this; Trekker9, Slabwalker and JP however had work commitments and would squeeze it into 7 days - leaving us after 5-6 days and taking 2 days to exit over Lamarck. Although the trail from the head of Florence Lake to Evolution Valley climbs over 2,000 feet, most of the elevation gain comes during the last miles. They finished up their meal and continued onward, while I read my book and watched the river go by. If I did this, then I might make it over Piute Pass the next day, and hike out early on the final day, which would allow me to drive home later on that afternoon. Campsite 4: Darwin Canyon. The first day of hiking is over moderate terrain with meadows and the occasional company of the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. Starting at the North Lake TH, we will cross Piute Pass (11,423'). Which didnt happen until I reached Piute Creek and the metal bridge that crossed it. We did 7 nights, 8 days with our first and last days being half days. It was quite dramatic. One bite of the Evolution area is liable to infect any passerby, causing even the most mileage-minded thru-hike If the John Muir Trail is the crown jewel of the Pacific Crest Trail, then the Evolution Basin and Valley are perhaps the most strikingly-sculpted gem to be carefully placed in that jewel. I'll be going back next weekend into the Evolution Basin higher up. Day two Continue on Piute Pass to reach the JMT (and enter the national park) at mile 17.4. Campsites: Good sites along Evolution Creek by Evolution Meadow, McClure Meadow and Colby Meadow. Nineteen miles from the nearest trailhead, Evolution Valley is a two-day hike for most backpackers. This was the most difficult day as we ascended over 3200 with 30+ & 40+ lb packs. This is an excellent report on a great hiking trip. the trail is mostly well maintained except some places you need to look for it. Deer are seen occasionally. Dinners were instant potatoes with packaged salmon or tuna along with instant soup or couscous. As we got going again I was giving myself a pretty serious mental pep talk about taking it easy and giving myself the time needed to work my way up the 700 feet of rocky switchbacks. Though cooler than July, day-wear was still shorts and t-shirts and nights two layers and a puffy jacket. Because of the late snowfall, we were graced with the continued presence of wildflowers, complimented by the beginnings of golden fall, as we skip-trah-lahed our way alongside crashing gorge waterfalls and the calm tracing of the San Joaquin River. Just finished the loop from south lake to north lake. It was high noon, I realized, and there wasnt any shade at all on the trail with the sun beaming straight down between the trees. I am now a retired academic, so I was able, in all three trips, to exploit my college timing to hike in early September before the start of classes. Usually we did it in 7 days. Hundreds of feet of granite on one side, and beautiful open meadow on the other. I said a silent thank you before dropping over the top, then apologized to my knees for the steep, descending switch backs they were about to receive. I wasnt thrilled, but I figured that there would be a side creek somewhere along the way, as the map showed some possibilities. John Muir Rock rises directly to the east. That was a big mistake. Muir Pass snow is melting fast and maybe only 1.5 miles worth heading northbound and maybe 2 over towards Sapphire Lake. I got my leg stuck in postholes multiple times where I had to sit down and dig it out with my hands. No mosquitos. Free parkinggotta love that! So prepare rain And wind covering if comfort is a must. mostly exposed to the sun so take a good cover. Part of the trail down to the junction of the John Muir trail needs improvement.
